After a few years of remote work and virtual everything, Shopify brought its staff together in Toronto for a summit — and a night out at Budweiser Stage. No guests, no partners, no customers. Just staffs.
That detail mattered. There's a different energy when it's only the people you actually work with. Everyone was ready to let loose.
The lineup was three acts: The Roots opened, Weezer headlined, and Girl Talk closed the night as DJ.
The Roots set the tone — tight, live, and funnier than you'd expect. Questlove on drums with the full band is always worth showing up early for.
Weezer were Weezer. Rivers Cuomo and the band played the songs people wanted to hear, the crowd sang every word back to them, and nobody pretended to be too cool for it.
Girl Talk closed things out. If you've never seen him perform, the setup is deceptively simple — one guy, a laptop, and an absurd number of mashups — but the crowd response is anything but simple. It was a perfect way to end the night.
It was one of those events that reminded everyone why being in the same place at the same time still matters.
